You paste your project's URL and an API key from its settings. A key belongs to one project and acts as the person who made it, so one connection reaches one site.

API base URL
wss://api.framer.com/channel/headless-plugin. Framer's Server API is a WebSocket connection, not a set of web addresses. PopMCP opens one for each call and closes it afterwards.
Rate limits
Framer does not publish a rate limit. It can refuse a key that has too many sessions open, and PopMCP tries again before reporting that. Calls on one connection run one at a time.

Before you begin

  • A Framer project you can open and edit. A key acts as you, so it can only do what you can do in that project.

Get your credentials

Copy your project's URL

Open the project in Framer and copy the address from your browser. It contains /projects/ and looks like https://framer.com/projects/My-Site--abc123. The address of your published site is a different one and will not work here.

Open this screen →

Create an API key

In the project, open Site Settings, or press Cmd+K and search for settings. Under General, find API Keys, create a key and copy it. A key just for PopMCP is the safest choice, because you can delete it on its own.

API Keys

A key works for this project only and acts as the person who created it.

Paste both into PopMCP

Open Framer in PopMCP, paste the Project URL and the API key, and connect. PopMCP opens the project to check them and names the connection after it. New connections start read-only, and an owner or admin can allow writes.

Connect in PopMCP

Open your workspace, choose Framer in the marketplace, and fill in the connect dialog:

FieldWhat to enter
Project URLtextOpen the project in Framer and copy the address from your browser.
API keysecretIn the project, open Site Settings > General > API Keys and create a key. Stored encrypted, used server-side only.Encrypted with AES-256-GCM on save and never shown again.

PopMCP verifies the credential against Framer immediately. On success the connection flips to Verified and its MCP tools are provisioned.

Verify it worked

PopMCP shows Framer as Verified, named after your project. Ask for an overview: framer_get_site_overview answers with what is live, the pages changed since the last publish, and your CMS collections.

Troubleshooting

"Framer did not accept this API key for this project"

Why: The key was copied incompletely or deleted, or it was made in a different project. A key only works for the project it was made in.

Fix: Create a new key under Site Settings, General, API Keys in this project, and paste it with this project's URL.

"That does not look like a Framer project URL"

Why: The address of the published site was pasted, or the project address was cut short.

Fix: Open the project in Framer and copy the whole address from your browser. It contains /projects/.

"Framer refused the connection"

Why: Framer turned the connection away without saying why. The URL or key may be wrong, or Framer may be busy.

Fix: Check both values and try again in a minute. If it keeps happening, create a new key.

A tool says Framer has too many sessions open

Why: Framer limits how many sessions a key can have open, including scripts of your own that use the same key.

Fix: Nothing was changed. Try again in a minute, and give other scripts their own key.

A change does not show on the live site

Why: Edits save to the project, and visitors see them only after a publish and a deploy.

Fix: Ask the AI to publish and deploy, or publish from Framer yourself.
