Dropbox
Connect Dropbox to find, read, upload and organize files and folders, share links and folders, request files, and manage your team.
You create a scoped app in the Dropbox App Console, tick the permissions PopMCP uses and add PopMCP's redirect URI, then enter the app's App key and App secret in PopMCP and sign in to Dropbox to approve access.
- Setup time
- 4 min
- Auth
- OAuth authorization
- API base URL
- https://api.dropboxapi.com/2
- Rate limits
- Per linked account (or per team for team admin tools). Dropbox publishes no numbers: when a limit is reached it answers 429 with a Retry-After header giving the seconds to wait. Many simultaneous changes to the same folder can also get 429 too_many_write_operations.
Before you begin
- A Dropbox account on any plan, Basic (free) included. Sign in to the App Console with the account you want to connect: a new app works for your own account straight away, with no review by Dropbox.
- PopMCP's redirect URI from the connect form: https://app.popmcp.com/api/providers/dropbox/callback
- Only for the team admin tools (members, groups, team folders, devices, legal holds and the activity log): a Dropbox team plan and a team admin account.
Get your credentials
Open the App Console
Go to dropbox.com/developers/apps and sign in with the Dropbox account you want to connect. Click Create app.
My apps
Apps you have created on the DBX Platform.
You have not created any apps yet
Create one to get an App key and App secret.
Create a scoped app with Full Dropbox access
Under Choose an API pick Scoped access. Under Choose the type of access you need pick Full Dropbox so the AI can reach every folder (App folder would limit it to one folder of its own). Name the app, such as PopMCP for Acme (Dropbox does not allow the word Dropbox in app names), and click Create app.
Create a new app on the DBX Platform
Tick the permissions and submit
Open the Permissions tab. Under Individual Scopes tick account_info.write, files.metadata.write, files.content.write, files.content.read, sharing.write, file_requests.write and contacts.write (ticking a write box ticks its read box too), then click Submit at the bottom. Leave files.permanent_delete unticked unless you want the AI to delete files for good. A team admin who wants the team tools also ticks the Team Scopes before submitting.
Permissions
Individual Scopes
Changes take effect only after Submit, and a connection keeps the permissions it was granted, so reconnect after adding one.
Add PopMCP's redirect URI
Open the Settings tab. Under OAuth 2, enter https://app.popmcp.com/api/providers/dropbox/callback in Redirect URIs exactly as PopMCP shows it and click Add.

Generated access token is not needed: those tokens expire after a few hours. PopMCP signs in for you and keeps the connection working.
Copy the App key and App secret
Still on Settings, copy the App key, then click Show next to App secret and copy it too.

Enter both in PopMCP and sign in
Enter the App key in App key and the secret in App secret, then click Sign in with Dropbox. Sign in with the same Dropbox account and click Allow on Dropbox's access page. A team admin who ticked the Team Scopes signs in as the admin and approves access for the team.
Connect in PopMCP
Open your workspace, choose Dropbox in the marketplace, and fill in the connect dialog:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| App keytext | Only needed to use your own app. In the Dropbox App Console (dropbox.com/developers/apps) click Create app, choose Scoped access and Full Dropbox, name it and create it. On the Permissions tab tick account_info.write, files.metadata.write, files.content.write, files.content.read, sharing.write, file_requests.write and contacts.write (ticking a write box ticks its read box too), then click Submit. On the Settings tab add the redirect URI shown here under OAuth 2, Redirect URIs, and copy the App key and App secret (click Show). |
| App secretsecret | On the app's Settings tab click Show next to App secret and copy it. Stored encrypted and used only on our server.Encrypted with AES-256-GCM on save and never shown again. |

https://app.popmcp.com/api/providers/dropbox/callbackIn the Dropbox App Console open your app's Settings tab, paste this under OAuth 2, Redirect URIs and click Add. It must match exactly, or Dropbox refuses the sign-in.
PopMCP verifies the credential against Dropbox immediately. On success the connection flips to Verified and its MCP tools are provisioned.
Permissions to request
PopMCP asks Dropbox for exactly the permissions you tick in the connect form. Unticked permissions leave their tools listed but failing, so keep the defaults unless you have a reason to narrow them.
Dropbox grants exactly what you tick. 0 of 1 are on by default.
Other
teamTeam admin tools (Dropbox team admins only)Also manage your team's members, groups, team folders, devices and activity log. Sign in as a team admin; file tools then act as you. With your own app, tick the Team scopes on its Permissions tab instead.
Verify it worked
PopMCP shows Dropbox as Connected under your name and email, and dropbox_list_folder with the path "" lists the top of your Dropbox.
Troubleshooting
Dropbox shows an error about the redirect URI instead of asking for access
Why: PopMCP's callback is not in the app's Redirect URIs, or differs by a character.
Fix: On the app's **Settings** tab, under **OAuth 2**, add `https://app.popmcp.com/api/providers/dropbox/callback` to **Redirect URIs** and click **Add**. Then connect again.
"Dropbox did not accept the App key and App secret"
Why: The App key or App secret was mistyped, or they come from different apps.
Fix: On the app's **Settings** tab copy the **App key**, click **Show** next to **App secret**, copy it, and enter both in PopMCP again.
"Your Dropbox app has no file permissions yet"
Why: The app's Permissions tab was not submitted, so the sign-in granted only basic account information.
Fix: On the **Permissions** tab tick the scopes from the steps, click **Submit**, then connect again.
A tool answers missing_scope
Why: The app does not have the permission that tool needs, or it was added after you connected.
Fix: Tick the permission the message names on the **Permissions** tab, click **Submit**, then reconnect Dropbox in PopMCP so the new sign-in includes it.
A team tool says it needs a team admin connection
Why: The connection is linked to one account, and team tools act on the whole team.
Fix: As a Dropbox team admin, tick the **Team Scopes** on the app's **Permissions** tab, click **Submit**, and reconnect Dropbox.
Someone else cannot sign in through your app
Why: A new app links only the account that created it.
Fix: On the **Settings** tab click **Enable additional users**, or have each person create an app of their own.
Team folders are missing from listings
Why: In a team with a team space, team folders live above your own folder.
Fix: Ask the AI to look in the team space: the tools take path_root "team_space" and then list from the top of the team's space.
429 too_many_requests or too_many_write_operations
Why: Dropbox limits each account, and many changes to the same folder at once also collide.
Fix: Wait for the time Dropbox gives and try again, and use the batch tools for many files.
"Dropbox no longer accepts this connection's sign-in"
Why: Access was removed in Dropbox (Settings, Connected apps), the app's secret changed, or the app was deleted.
Fix: Reconnect Dropbox to sign in again.
