You paste one value into PopMCP: an API token the Wistia account owner creates in Account Settings, on the API tab. It takes a minute, costs nothing and needs no approval from Wistia.

Wistia allows 600 requests a minute per account across api.wistia.com and upload.wistia.com; above that it answers 429 with a Retry-After header saying how many seconds to wait. Playing or downloading media files does not count toward the limit.

Before you begin

  • A Wistia account. The API comes with the account; no add-on is needed
  • The Account Owner's login: only the owner sees the API tab and can create tokens. Anyone else asks the owner to make one
  • A minute to copy the token when it is created. Wistia shows a token only once

Get your credentials

Open the API tab in Account Settings

Sign in to Wistia as the Account Owner, open Account Settings from the account menu and choose the API tab, or go straight to account.wistia.com/account/api. The page lists the tokens the account already has, with a New token button at the top.

Create a token for PopMCP

Click New token, give it a nickname such as PopMCP, and tick its permissions. Read, update & delete anything lets the AI manage your videos, folders, captions, channels and webinars as well as read stats. For read-only use, tick Read all data instead. Then click Create token.

Permissions can be changed later from the ... menu beside the token, without making a new one.

Copy the token

Wistia shows the new token once. Copy it now: after you leave or refresh the page it can no longer be copied, and you would need to make another one. Keep it private, because anyone who has it can use your account within its permissions.

Paste the token into PopMCP

In PopMCP open Marketplace, find Wistia, click Connect and paste the token into API token. PopMCP checks it against your account, names the connection after your Wistia account and stores the token encrypted.

Connect in PopMCP

Open your workspace, choose Wistia in the marketplace, and fill in the connect dialog:

FieldWhat to enter
API tokensecretIn Wistia open Account Settings, then the API tab (account.wistia.com/account/api), click New token, give it a name, tick the permissions and create it. Copy it right away: Wistia shows a token only once. Only the Account Owner sees the API tab. Stored encrypted.Encrypted with AES-256-GCM on save and never shown again.

PopMCP verifies the credential against Wistia immediately. On success the connection flips to Verified and its MCP tools are provisioned.

Verify it worked

PopMCP reads your account and the token's own permissions, shows the connection under your Wistia account name, and notes when the token is read-only. Asking the AI to list your five newest videos confirms it works.

Troubleshooting

"Wistia did not accept this API token. Copy it again from Account Settings, API (account.wistia.com/account/api). A token is shown only once, so create a new one if you no longer have it."

Why: Part of the token was missed when copying, or the token was deleted in Wistia.

Fix: Create a new token on the API tab, copy the whole value straight away and paste it into PopMCP.

"This token cannot read the Wistia account. Give it the Read all data permission (or Read, update & delete anything) in Account Settings, API, then connect again."

Why: The token was created with only the Upload media permission.

Fix: Open the ... menu beside the token, choose to edit it, tick Read all data or Read, update & delete anything, save, then connect again.

There is no API tab in Account Settings

Why: You are not the Account Owner. Wistia shows that tab to the owner only.

Fix: Ask the Account Owner to create the token and share it with you, or to connect Wistia in PopMCP themselves.

A tool answers that the token lacks a permission

Why: The token is read-only or covers only part of the account (media or stats).

Fix: Edit the token's permissions on the API tab (no new token needed). The answer names the permission the tool needs.

"Wistia is limiting requests for this account right now"

Why: More than 600 API requests in a minute across everything that uses the account's tokens.

Fix: Wait a minute and try again. Other apps using the same Wistia account share the limit.
