Per Todoist user: 1,000 partial and 100 full Sync requests every 15 minutes, with a batch of up to 100 commands counting as one request. Request bodies up to 1 MiB, 15 seconds per request (5 minutes for uploads). Over a limit Todoist answers 429 with a retry_after.

Before you begin

  • A Todoist account on any plan, the free one included
  • Todoist on the web (app.todoist.com) or the desktop app, where Settings, Integrations, Developer shows your API token

Get your credentials

Sign in to Todoist on the web or the desktop app

Use this token to connect Todoist to other apps and scripts. It has full access to your account.

Copy your API token

Click Copy API token. The token is copied to your clipboard; it is 40 letters and numbers. Do not click Issue a new API token unless you mean to replace it: that signs you out of Todoist on every device and stops every app that uses the old token.

API token copied to clipboard.

Keep the token private: anyone with it can read and change everything in your Todoist.

Paste the token into PopMCP

In PopMCP, paste the token into API token and connect. PopMCP checks whose account it is by asking Todoist for your profile, stores the token encrypted and locks the connection to your account. New connections start read-only until an owner or admin allows write actions.

Connect in PopMCP

Open your workspace, choose Todoist in the marketplace, and fill in the connect dialog:

FieldWhat to enter
API tokensecretIn Todoist (web or desktop) open Settings, then Integrations, then the Developer tab, and click Copy API token. It works on every Todoist plan and gives full access to your account. Stored encrypted.Encrypted with AES-256-GCM on save and never shown again.

PopMCP verifies the credential against Todoist immediately. On success the connection flips to Verified and its MCP tools are provisioned.

Verify it worked

PopMCP marks the Todoist connection Verified under your Todoist name and records your time zone. Asking the AI what is overdue or due today returns your tasks grouped by project.

Troubleshooting

"Todoist did not accept this API token. In Todoist open Settings, Integrations, Developer, click Copy API token and paste it again (all 40 characters)."

Why: The token was copied incompletely, has extra text around it, or was replaced when someone clicked Issue a new API token.

Fix: Open **Settings**, **Integrations**, **Developer**, click **Copy API token** and paste it again into PopMCP.

"That does not look like a Todoist API token."

Why: Something other than the token was pasted, such as a link, an email address or a password.

Fix: Paste only the token from **Copy API token**. PopMCP never needs your Todoist password.

A tool answers that it needs a paid Todoist plan or is over the plan's limit

Why: The feature (for example reminders) or the number of projects, filters or labels is limited on your Todoist plan.

Fix: Ask the AI to run todoist_get_user_plan_limits to see what your plan allows, or upgrade in Todoist under **Settings**, **Subscription**.

Tools fail with 429

Why: Todoist limits each user to about 1,000 requests every 15 minutes.

Fix: Wait the number of seconds the error gives. For many changes at once, ask the AI to use todoist_add_tasks, todoist_complete_tasks or todoist_sync_commands, which do up to 100 changes in one request.

The AI says a change was not sent because the connection is read-only

Why: New connections start read-only, so tasks cannot be added, completed or changed yet.

Fix: An owner or admin can allow write actions for the Todoist connection in PopMCP.

The connection stopped working after a new token was issued

Why: Issuing a new API token in Todoist turns the old one off.

Fix: Copy the new token from **Settings**, **Integrations**, **Developer** and paste it into PopMCP to reconnect.
