Mention
Connect Mention to read what the web and social media say about your brand, track sentiment, tag and assign mentions, and find influencers.
You paste one value into PopMCP: the access token at the bottom of an app's page in Mention's developer portal. Creating the app takes about a minute.
Paid plan required before this connector works
No one reviews you, but the account needs API access. Mention's pricing page lists one Company plan, with API access for custom integrations as a paid add-on, not included in the plan.
- Typical wait
- None once the add-on is on the account. Mention sells the plan and add-on through its team, so allow for a conversation with them.
- Cost
- Mention no longer shows a public price: its pricing page asks you to talk to its team. Ask for the API add-on by name.
- Blocked until approved
- Everything. Without API access Mention refuses the token, so PopMCP cannot verify the connection or call any tool.
- Works meanwhile
- Read the API reference at dev.mention.com. Mention offers a free trial, so ask its team whether the trial can include API access.
Where to apply: No application. Ask your Mention admin or Mention's team to add API access to the account, then create an app at dev.mention.com/apps and copy its access token.
- Searching mentions with q, and filtering or sorting by source or reach, also need a plan with search access. Without it those filters answer an error while the rest works.
- Mention's own pricing page and its FAQ both mention the API, but only the pricing page says it is an add-on. Confirm what your contract includes.
- Setup time
- 2 min
- Auth
- API credentials
- API base URL
- https://api.mention.net/api
- Rate limits
- Mention limits requests by type of resource and method and publishes no numbers. Over a limit it answers 429 with an X-Rate-Limit-Reset header holding the time the limit resets. One open stream per account.
Before you begin
- A Mention account with API access. On the Company plan, Mention lists API access as a paid add-on
- A browser where you can sign in to Mention's developer portal at dev.mention.com
Get your credentials
Sign in to Mention's developer portal
Open dev.mention.com/apps and sign in with the Mention account the AI should work with. The connection will only ever reach this account, so use the one that holds your alerts.
Create an app, or open one you already have
If an app is already listed, open it and go to the next step. If not, use the create page and fill in what it asks for. A name such as PopMCP is all that matters here: you are only creating the app to get its token, and nobody else will see it.
Create an app
Fill in the fields the page asks for. PopMCP does not use the callback URL when you connect with a token.
Copy the access token
On the app's page, scroll to the bottom and copy the access token. Mention keeps the client ID and client secret on the same page: those are not what PopMCP needs. Keep the token private, because it gives full access to your Mention account.
PopMCP
At the bottom of the app's page. It gives full access to your Mention account.
Paste the token into PopMCP
In PopMCP, paste the token into Access token and connect. PopMCP asks Mention whose account it is, stores the token encrypted and locks the connection to that account, so there is nothing else to choose. New connections start read-only until an owner or admin allows write actions.
Connect in PopMCP
Open your workspace, choose Mention in the marketplace, and fill in the connect dialog:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Access tokensecret | Open dev.mention.com/apps, open your app (or create one) and copy the access token at the bottom of its page. It gives full access to your Mention account. Stored encrypted.Encrypted with AES-256-GCM on save and never shown again. |
PopMCP verifies the credential against Mention immediately. On success the connection flips to Verified and its MCP tools are provisioned.
Verify it worked
PopMCP marks the Mention connection Verified under your Mention account name. Asking the AI to list your alerts returns each alert with its unread and inbox counts.
Troubleshooting
"Mention did not accept this access token. Copy it again from the bottom of your app's page at dev.mention.com/apps. If it still fails, check that your Mention plan includes API access."
Why: The token was copied incompletely or has extra text around it, or the account does not have API access.
Fix: Copy the token again from the bottom of the app's page. If it still fails, ask your Mention admin whether the plan includes API access.
"Mention says this account does not have API access."
Why: Mention answered 402: the plan does not include API access.
Fix: On the Company plan API access is a paid add-on. Ask your Mention admin or Mention's team to turn it on, then connect again.
"That looks like the app's client ID or an account id."
Why: The client ID was copied instead of the token. It is on the same page.
Fix: Scroll to the bottom of the app's page and copy the access token.
A mention has a link but no title or text
Why: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other networks do not allow Mention to pass their posts through its API.
Fix: Open the mention's original_url to read it. The full text is shown in the Mention app and in its exports.
A tool answers 402 on a search or a filter
Why: The q parameter, the source filter and sorting need a plan with search access.
Fix: Drop the filter, or ask your Mention admin about search access.
A tool answers 403 when marking a favorite or moving a mention to trash
Why: Those changes need the admin role on the alert, and removing someone else's access needs a team admin.
Fix: Ask the alert's owner to give you the role, or to make the change.
Tools fail with 429
Why: Mention limits requests by type of resource and does not publish the numbers.
Fix: Wait a minute and try again. Asking for larger pages uses fewer requests than many small ones.
The AI says a change was not sent because the connection is read-only
Why: New connections start read-only, so alerts, tags and mentions cannot be changed yet.
Fix: An owner or admin can allow write actions for the Mention connection in PopMCP.
