You paste one value into PopMCP: an access token from a small app you make in Vimeo's developer site. Making the app and the token takes about two minutes, costs nothing and needs no review.

Rate limits
Vimeo limits each person per minute according to their Vimeo membership, and doubles the quota for requests that ask for specific fields, which PopMCP does by default when reading videos. Above the limit it answers 429 until the next minute.

Before you begin

  • A Vimeo account you can sign in to
  • Nothing to install. The app you make is only a place for the token to live, so any name will do
  • A minute to copy the token when it is generated

Get your credentials

Open My Apps and start a new app

Sign in to Vimeo and go to developer.vimeo.com/apps. This is the My Apps page. Click Create an app. In Vimeo's terms an app can be as small as a script, so you are not building anything: it only gives the token somewhere to live.

Your apps appear here.

Name the app and create it

Give the app any App name, such as PopMCP, and a short Brief description. For Will people besides you be able to access your app? choose No. Tick the box to agree to the Vimeo Developer Addendum and the Vimeo Terms of Service, then click Create App.

No

The confirmation box above the button must be ticked before Vimeo creates the app.

Generate an access token

Vimeo opens your app's page. Scroll to Generate an access token. Pick Authenticated (you), because an Unauthenticated token only sees public data and PopMCP will refuse it. Tick the scopes: Public, Private, Create, Edit, Delete, Interact, Upload and Stats for everything, or Public, Private and Stats for read-only use. Click Generate.

Vimeo asks for Private before it lets you tick most other scopes.

Copy the token

The new token appears under Personal Access Tokens on the same page. Copy it right away and keep it private, because anyone who has it can use your account within its scopes. The Client identifier and Client secrets on this page are not tokens, so leave those alone.

Paste the token into PopMCP

In PopMCP open Marketplace, find Vimeo, click Connect and paste the token into Access token. PopMCP checks it against your account, names the connection after your Vimeo user and stores the token encrypted.

Connect in PopMCP

Open your workspace, choose Vimeo in the marketplace, and fill in the connect dialog:

FieldWhat to enter
Access tokensecretAt developer.vimeo.com/apps choose Create an app (any name and a short description; answer No to whether other people will use it). On the app's page, under Generate an access token, pick Authenticated (you), tick the scopes and click Generate. Copy the token right away. Stored encrypted.Encrypted with AES-256-GCM on save and never shown again.

PopMCP verifies the credential against Vimeo immediately. On success the connection flips to Verified and its MCP tools are provisioned.

Verify it worked

PopMCP reads the token's own details, shows the connection under your Vimeo name and notes the scopes it has, including when it is read-only. Asking the AI to list your five newest videos confirms it works.

Troubleshooting

"Vimeo did not accept this access token. On your app's page at developer.vimeo.com/apps, generate a new one under Generate an access token and paste that. The Client identifier and Client secret on the same page are not tokens."

Why: Part of the token was missed when copying, the token was deleted, or the client identifier or a client secret was pasted instead.

Fix: Generate a new token on your app's page, copy the whole value and paste it into PopMCP.

"This token is Unauthenticated, so it is not tied to your Vimeo account."

Why: Unauthenticated was picked when the token was generated. That kind only sees public data.

Fix: Generate a new token with Authenticated (you) selected and connect with that.

A tool answers that it needs a scope

Why: The token was generated without that scope, and a token cannot gain scopes later.

Fix: Generate a new token with the scope ticked, then reconnect Vimeo in PopMCP with it.

Vimeo refuses an upload

Why: Your app may need upload access. Vimeo's guide asks for it before uploading, and a Vimeo Free account has to ask through support.

Fix: On your app's page find Upload Access under Permissions and choose Request Upload Access. On a Free account, open a ticket with Vimeo support instead.

A connection that used to work now fails

Why: Vimeo automatically deletes tokens that look inactive, or the token was deleted under Personal Access Tokens.

Fix: Generate a new token and reconnect Vimeo in PopMCP.

A team's videos do not show up

Why: A token belongs to one Vimeo user and works on that user's library by default.

Fix: Ask the AI to use the team owner's user id. Your Vimeo user must be on the team, and Vimeo applies your role there.
