# Trello setup for PopMCP

You paste two values into PopMCP: the API Key generated on a Trello Power-Up you own, and a user Token you grant that Power-Up against your own Trello account.

- Auth: API credentials
- Setup time: 6 min
- API base URL: https://api.trello.com/1
- Credentials screen: https://trello.com/power-ups/admin
- Provider docs: https://developer.atlassian.com/cloud/trello/guides/rest-api/api-introduction/

## Before you begin

- Trello account on any plan, including Free
- Membership of a Trello Workspace that can own the Power-Up. Trello issues API keys per Power-Up, so there is no standalone API key page.
- A Trello login that is a member of the boards you want PopMCP to reach

## Get your credentials

### 1. Open the Power-Ups admin portal

Sign in to Trello, then open https://trello.com/power-ups/admin.

Screen: https://trello.com/power-ups/admin

### 2. Create a Power-Up to own the key

Click New in the top right and fill in Name, Workspace, Email, Support Email and Author. Click Create.

Screen: https://trello.com/power-ups/admin

### 3. Generate the API Key

Open the new Power-Up and click API Key in the left menu. Click Generate a new API Key and copy the value labelled Key.

Screen: https://trello.com/power-ups/admin

### 4. Authorize yourself and copy the Token

On the same page, click the hyperlinked Token to the right of your key. Click Allow, then copy the token from the page that follows.

Screen: https://trello.com/1/authorize?expiration=never&scope=read,write,account&response_type=token&key=YOUR_KEY (replace YOUR_KEY with your Trello key)

### 5. Paste both values into PopMCP

Put the key in API Key and the token in Token, then click connect.

## Fields PopMCP asks for

- API Key (apiKey) [required]: Go to https://trello.com/power-ups/admin, open (or create) a Power-Up, and on its "API key" tab generate an API Key. Copy the Key (you do NOT need the secret).
- Token (token) [required]: On the same API key page, click the "Token" link ("you can manually generate a Token") and Allow. Or visit https://trello.com/1/authorize?expiration=never&scope=read,write,account&response_type=token&key=YOUR_KEY . Copy the token. It's sent as the token query param, stored encrypted, and used server-side only.

## Verify

PopMCP shows the Trello connection as Connected and names the Trello member the token belongs to. Asking for your boards returns the boards in the Workspace you authorized.

## Troubleshooting

### The left menu shows Authorization instead of API Key

Cause: Some accounts are on the newer admin layout.

Fix: Open Authorization, then Trello auth. The same key and Token link live there.

### The New Power-Up form refuses to save

Cause: iframe connector URL is listed as required for real Power-Ups.

Fix: Put any https URL you control in that field. PopMCP never loads it.

### 401 with body 'invalid token'

Cause: The token was revoked, expired, or belongs to a different API key.

Fix: Re-run the Token link from the same Power-Up's API Key page with expiration=never and paste the fresh token.

### 401 with body 'invalid key'

Cause: You pasted the Power-Up's secret instead of the API key, or the Power-Up was deleted.

Fix: Copy the value labelled Key on the API Key tab, not the secret.

### 429 Too Many Requests

Cause: More than 300 calls per 10s on the key or 100 per 10s on the token.

Fix: Slow the tool calls down. The x-rate-limit-api-key-remaining and x-rate-limit-api-token-remaining headers show your budget.

### Boards are missing from results

Cause: The token only sees boards your Trello user is a member of.

Fix: Add yourself to the board, or generate the token from an account that is a member of it.

### You need to revoke access

Cause: The token stays valid until you disable it.

Fix: Open your Trello profile, go to Settings, then Applications, and remove the token.
