# Todoist setup for PopMCP

You paste one value into PopMCP: your Todoist API token, copied from Settings, Integrations, Developer in Todoist.

- Auth: API credentials
- Setup time: 1 min
- API base URL: https://api.todoist.com/api/v1
- Credentials screen: https://app.todoist.com/app/settings/integrations/developer
- Provider docs: https://www.todoist.com/help/articles/find-your-api-token-Jpzx9IIlB

## Before you begin

- A Todoist account on any plan, the free one included
- Todoist on the web (app.todoist.com) or the desktop app, where Settings, Integrations, Developer shows your API token

## Get your credentials

### 1. Sign in to Todoist on the web or the desktop app

Open [app.todoist.com](https://app.todoist.com) and sign in with the account whose tasks the AI should work with. Any plan works, including the free one.

Screen: https://app.todoist.com/app

### 2. Open Settings, Integrations, Developer

Click your avatar at the top left and choose Settings. Open Integrations, then the Developer tab at the top. The link above opens that page directly.

Screen: https://app.todoist.com/app/settings/integrations/developer

### 3. Copy your API token

Click Copy API token. The token is copied to your clipboard; it is 40 letters and numbers. Do not click Issue a new API token unless you mean to replace it: that signs you out of Todoist on every device and stops every app that uses the old token.

Screen: https://app.todoist.com/app/settings/integrations/developer

### 4. Paste the token into PopMCP

In PopMCP, paste the token into API token and connect. PopMCP checks whose account it is by asking Todoist for your profile, stores the token encrypted and locks the connection to your account. New connections start read-only until an owner or admin allows write actions.

## Fields PopMCP asks for

- API token (apiToken) [required]: In Todoist (web or desktop) open Settings, then Integrations, then the Developer tab, and click Copy API token. It works on every Todoist plan and gives full access to your account. Stored encrypted.

## Verify

PopMCP marks the Todoist connection Verified under your Todoist name and records your time zone. Asking the AI what is overdue or due today returns your tasks grouped by project.

## Troubleshooting

### "Todoist did not accept this API token. In Todoist open Settings, Integrations, Developer, click Copy API token and paste it again (all 40 characters)."

Cause: The token was copied incompletely, has extra text around it, or was replaced when someone clicked Issue a new API token.

Fix: Open **Settings**, **Integrations**, **Developer**, click **Copy API token** and paste it again into PopMCP.

### "That does not look like a Todoist API token."

Cause: Something other than the token was pasted, such as a link, an email address or a password.

Fix: Paste only the token from **Copy API token**. PopMCP never needs your Todoist password.

### A tool answers that it needs a paid Todoist plan or is over the plan's limit

Cause: The feature (for example reminders) or the number of projects, filters or labels is limited on your Todoist plan.

Fix: Ask the AI to run todoist_get_user_plan_limits to see what your plan allows, or upgrade in Todoist under **Settings**, **Subscription**.

### Tools fail with 429

Cause: Todoist limits each user to about 1,000 requests every 15 minutes.

Fix: Wait the number of seconds the error gives. For many changes at once, ask the AI to use todoist_add_tasks, todoist_complete_tasks or todoist_sync_commands, which do up to 100 changes in one request.

### The AI says a change was not sent because the connection is read-only

Cause: New connections start read-only, so tasks cannot be added, completed or changed yet.

Fix: An owner or admin can allow write actions for the Todoist connection in PopMCP.

### The connection stopped working after a new token was issued

Cause: Issuing a new API token in Todoist turns the old one off.

Fix: Copy the new token from **Settings**, **Integrations**, **Developer** and paste it into PopMCP to reconnect.
