# Similarweb setup for PopMCP

You end up with one Similarweb Standard API key, generated under Settings → Account → API and switched on in the Activation column, pasted into PopMCP's API Key field.

- Auth: API credentials
- Setup time: 5 min
- API base URL: https://api.similarweb.com/v1
- Credentials screen: https://pro.similarweb.com/
- Provider docs: https://developers.similarweb.com/docs/getting-started

## Approval required before this works

Similarweb only issues working API keys to accounts whose subscription includes API access. Similarweb states that API access comes with its Business and Enterprise plans or as a standalone package, all sold through sales, so a sales conversation and a contract gate the credentials rather than a review queue.

- Typical wait: Sales-led: expect days to weeks to get a quote and contract in place, since there is no self-serve path to API entitlement. Once the subscription includes API access, an account admin mints and activates a key in minutes.
- Cost: Not published. Similarweb says API access is part of its Business and Enterprise plans or available as a standalone package, and that consumption runs on a data credit model where you pay for the data you receive rather than per API call. Pricing is quoted by sales, so treat any figure you see elsewhere as unverified.
- Blocked until approved: Every paid endpoint: traffic and engagement, audience interests, traffic sources, keyword and search data, app data, segment analysis and batch/bulk requests. Without an entitled subscription you cannot generate a usable API key at all, and there is no trial key or free developer tier.
- Works meanwhile: Nothing that returns live data. You can read the full API v5 reference and build your integration against the documented request and response schemas before you have a key, so only the credential step is blocked.

## Before you begin

- A Similarweb subscription that includes API access (Standard API, Batch API, or both)
- Account admin role, because only account admins can generate API keys
- Add-on entitlements for App Intelligence and for some keyword and demographics endpoints
- Data credits remaining on the subscription

## Get your credentials

### 1. Sign in as an account admin

Go to pro.similarweb.com and sign in. Only account admins can generate API keys.

Screen: https://pro.similarweb.com/

### 2. Open Settings, then Account

In the left rail click Settings, then Account. Open the API tab.

Screen: https://pro.similarweb.com/

### 3. Open Standard API and generate a key

In the API section choose Standard API, then click Generate a new API key.

### 4. Set the primary user and create the key

Enter the email address of the primary user for the key and click Create. Copy the key from the Generated Keys table.

### 5. Switch the Activation toggle on

In Generated Keys, click the control to the left of the user's email address to expand their keys. Turn the toggle in the Activation column on for the new key.

### 6. Paste the key into PopMCP

Open the Similarweb connector in PopMCP, paste the value into API Key, and save.

## Fields PopMCP asks for

- API Key (apiKey) [required]: In Similarweb, open Settings → Account → the API section, choose “Standard API / Batch API” and click “Generate a new API key”. A Similarweb subscription with API access is required; some data (App Intelligence, certain keyword/demographics endpoints) needs the matching add-on. The key is sent as the `api_key` query param, stored encrypted, and used server-side only.

## Verify

PopMCP marks the Similarweb connector Connected, and a test call for total traffic on a domain returns monthly visits instead of an error.

## Troubleshooting

### Every request fails with "Invalid API key"

Cause: The key was generated but never activated, or it was copied with trailing whitespace.

Fix: Return to Settings → Account → API, switch the Activation toggle on for that key, then re-paste it into PopMCP.

### The API section is missing or read-only

Cause: You are not an account admin, or the subscription does not include API access.

Fix: Ask the subscription owner to run these steps or to make you an account admin.

### 403 or "not available for your subscription"

Cause: The endpoint belongs to a product or add-on the plan does not include, such as App Intelligence, Trends, or certain keyword reports.

Fix: Call the Check Capabilities endpoint to see what the key covers, then ask your Similarweb rep to enable the add-on.

### HTTP 429 Too many requests

Cause: More than 10 requests per second were sent on the key.

Fix: Pace the agent, or ask Similarweb about the Batch API for bulk domain work.

### Requests succeed but the data is empty

Cause: The account is out of data credits, or the domain has too little traffic for Similarweb to report on.

Fix: Check remaining credits under Settings → Account → API → Credit management, then test with a high-traffic domain.
