# Reddit setup for PopMCP

You end up pasting the client id printed under your app's name on reddit.com/prefs/apps and the matching secret field from the same card.

- Auth: OAuth authorization
- Setup time: 5 min
- API base URL: https://oauth.reddit.com
- Credentials screen: https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps
- Provider docs: https://www.reddit.com/dev/api

## Approval required before this works

Reddit's Data API Terms allow free use only for non-commercial purposes; any commercial use requires Reddit's prior written approval through its Data API access request, and paid commercial access is a signed agreement.

- Typical wait: 2-4 weeks for commercial review, per consistent developer reports; Reddit does not publish an SLA
- Cost: Free for approved non-commercial use. Reddit publishes no public rate card for commercial access - the widely-cited $0.24 per 1,000 API calls traces to Reddit's 2023 pricing announcement and is repeated across developer write-ups; enterprise bundles are reported in the thousands of dollars per month. Real pricing is quoted per deal after review.
- Blocked until approved: Nothing technical is blocked on day one - the block is contractual. Using the free tier for brand monitoring, lead generation, competitor tracking, resale of Reddit content or any revenue-generating product breaches the Data API Terms and risks the client ID being revoked. Volume above the free 100 queries per minute per OAuth client also needs the agreement.
- Works meanwhile: Registering an app at reddit.com/prefs/apps is instant and free: you get a client ID and secret straight away and can read posts, comments, subreddits and search, and post as the authorised user, at up to 100 queries per minute per OAuth client for personal, moderator, bot and academic use.

## Before you begin

- A Reddit account with a verified email address
- The app must be created as a web app, because only that type supports the browser authorization flow PopMCP uses
- Non-commercial use only on the free tier, since commercial use needs a separate paid agreement with Reddit
- Moderator status in a subreddit if you plan to use the mod scopes

## Get your credentials

### 1. Open your Reddit app preferences

Sign in to Reddit and go to reddit.com/prefs/apps. Scroll past authorized applications to the developed applications section at the bottom of the page.

Screen: https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps

### 2. Create a web app

Click are you a developer? create an app... and select the web app radio button. Type a name for the app.

Screen: https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps

### 3. Fill in the description, about url and redirect uri

Add a short description, put your product page in about url, and paste the callback URL from the PopMCP connect screen into redirect uri. Click create app.

Screen: https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps

### 4. Copy the client id and secret

On the new card under developed applications, copy the client id, the short string printed under the app name and the words *web app*. Copy the secret field and paste both into PopMCP's Client ID and Client secret fields.

Screen: https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps

## Fields PopMCP asks for

- App type (connectionType): Create your app as a "web app" at reddit.com/prefs/apps (not "script"). The web-app type is what supports the browser authorization flow.
- Client ID (clientId) [required]: The string shown directly under your app's name ("web app") at reddit.com/prefs/apps.
- Client secret (clientSecret) [required]: The "secret" field of your web app. Stored encrypted; used server-side only and never shown again.

## Verify

PopMCP shows the Reddit connector as Connected with your u/username, and a test call returns your subscribed subreddits rather than a 403.

## Troubleshooting

### invalid_grant, or the consent screen never appears

Cause: The app was created as a script type, which has no browser authorization flow.

Fix: Delete the app, create a new one with the web app radio button selected, then re-enter the new client id and secret.

### The card shows no secret field

Cause: The app was created as an installed app, and Reddit does not issue secrets to public clients.

Fix: Recreate the app as a web app.

### redirect_uri mismatch on authorization

Cause: Reddit stores one redirect uri per app and compares it character for character.

Fix: Click edit on the app card and paste the callback URL directly from the PopMCP connect screen, including the protocol and any trailing slash.

### 429 Too Many Requests

Cause: The free tier caps you around 100 queries per minute per OAuth client id.

Fix: Slow the polling interval and read the x-ratelimit-remaining and x-ratelimit-reset headers. Heavier or commercial volume needs a paid agreement with Reddit.

### 403 on moderator endpoints

Cause: The mod scopes were granted but the connected account does not moderate the target subreddit.

Fix: Connect with an account that holds the relevant moderator permission in that subreddit.
