# Pinterest setup for PopMCP

You end up pasting your Pinterest app's App ID and App secret key, both taken from the Api keys section of the Configure tab on developers.pinterest.com/apps.

- Auth: OAuth authorization
- Setup time: 10 min, plus up to one business day for Pinterest to approve trial access
- API base URL: https://api.pinterest.com/v5
- Credentials screen: https://developers.pinterest.com/apps/
- Provider docs: https://developers.pinterest.com/docs/getting-started/set-up-authentication-and-authorization/

## Approval required before this works

Pinterest must approve your registered app twice: first for Trial access (the app secret is withheld until then), and again for Standard access before Pins and Boards created via the API are visible to anyone but their creator.

- Typical wait: Pinterest states approvals "typically take one to three business days" for the app/Trial review. Pinterest publishes no timeframe for the Trial-to-Standard upgrade; developers widely report it taking weeks, so treat it as unbounded rather than planning around a number.
- Cost: Free
- Blocked until approved: Until the app is approved you cannot even see the client secret, so OAuth cannot be completed and no token exists. Once on Trial access the API works but is rate limited per app per day and everything you create is sandboxed: Pins and Boards are visible only to their creator, so nothing you publish is actually live on Pinterest until Standard access is granted.
- Works meanwhile: Create the Pinterest business account, register the app and configure redirect URIs. After Trial approval you can build and test the entire OAuth flow, read account data, and create Pins/Boards for real, they are just creator-only until Standard lands.

## Before you begin

- A Pinterest business account with a verified email address
- Developer Terms of Service accepted on the My apps page
- Trial access approved by Pinterest, which is reviewed each business day
- A live privacy policy URL and a specific app description, since vague descriptions are the most common reason trial access is denied
- Standard access if you need Pins and boards created through the API to be publicly visible rather than sandbox-only

## Get your credentials

### 1. Sign in as a business account and accept the Developer Terms

Sign in at developers.pinterest.com with a Pinterest business account and confirm the account email address. Open My apps in the top nav and accept the Developer Terms of Service when prompted.

Screen: https://developers.pinterest.com/apps/

### 2. Request trial access with Connect app

On the My apps page click Connect app. Fill in the app name, the app description and your privacy policy URL, then click Submit.

Screen: https://developers.pinterest.com/apps/

### 3. Add the PopMCP callback as a redirect URI

Once the app is approved, click Manage on the app card and open the Configure tab. Scroll to Redirect URIs, paste the callback URL from the PopMCP connect screen and click Add.

Screen: https://developers.pinterest.com/apps/

### 4. Copy the App ID and App secret key

Stay on the Configure tab and find the Api keys section. Copy the App ID and the App secret key into PopMCP's App ID and App secret fields.

Screen: https://developers.pinterest.com/apps/

### 5. Upgrade to Standard access when you go live

Open My apps and click Upgrade on the app card. Attach the screen recording of your OAuth flow when the form asks for it.

## Fields PopMCP asks for

- App ID (clientId) [required]: Your Pinterest app's "App ID" from developers.pinterest.com/apps. Add the callback URL above to that app's redirect URIs first.
- App secret (clientSecret) [required]: The app's secret token (same page as the App ID). Stored encrypted; used server-side only and never shown again.

## Verify

PopMCP shows the Pinterest connector as Connected with your Pinterest username and account type, and a test call to list boards returns your boards instead of an authorization error.

## Troubleshooting

### The Api keys section is empty or there is no Manage button

Cause: The app is still pending trial access review, so it has no Active status yet.

Fix: Wait for the approval email, which arrives on a business-day cycle, then reload developers.pinterest.com/apps and click Manage.

### The app secret key is masked and cannot be revealed again

Cause: Pinterest shows the secret once, at the moment it is generated.

Fix: Open Configure, click Reset app secret, confirm with Reset, then copy the new key straight into PopMCP.

### invalid_request: redirect_uri mismatch during authorization

Cause: The redirect URI in the app profile differs from the callback PopMCP sends, often by a trailing slash or http versus https.

Fix: Copy the callback URL straight from the PopMCP connect screen into Configure, Redirect URIs, and delete any near-duplicate entries.

### Trial access request denied

Cause: Pinterest most often rejects a missing or unreachable privacy policy URL, or an app description too vague to review.

Fix: Publish a real privacy policy, rewrite the description to name the endpoints you call and why, then resubmit Connect app.

### Pins created through PopMCP are not visible on the public profile

Cause: The app is on Trial access, where created Pins and boards are sandbox entities visible only to their creator.

Fix: Click Upgrade on the app card in My apps and include a recording of the OAuth flow.

### 429 Too Many Requests early in the day

Cause: Trial access uses a per-app daily budget rather than a per-minute one.

Fix: Check the x-ratelimit-remaining response header, batch your reads, and upgrade to Standard access for per-minute limits.
